30 Seconds to Mars - A Beautiful Lie

By Patrick Hennen

Overall Review

This is the sophomore effort from 30 Seconds To Mars and I must say this is a great CD! They have reinvented themselves from their previous disc, and I think fans will be in for a major treat when songs from both discs will be handed to them live. This disc was produced by the band as well as Josh Abraham, so the hands on approach truly seems to help. This is currently in my CD player now, boys and girls, so what are you waiting for? Go out and get your copy of this disc!

Track by Track Review

Attack: This is the first single from this disc - creepy little keyboard beginning, with an awesome build. I do like the contrast in the vocals from very smooth singing to the occasional scream. Leto pulls this off like a true seasoned veteran. It's a great opener!

A Beautiful Lie: I find this song interesting due to the non-traditional drum beat. I feel that makes this one even more catchy. I almost feel like I need a neck brace when I listen to this it.

The Kill: This is a great song that builds through each verse. Then it takes you right back to the beginning and rebuilds again. The harmonies in this number are tremendous with a great bridge, that will leave you guessing. This song would be very impressive live.

Was It A Dream?: There is another interesting drum beat at the beginning of this track. Softer guitar and more keyboards are involved here. I do love the bridge, it feels like the world just left from under your feet. There is a great feeling of falling there. Then the chorus comes back. What a great tune! I love the thunder at the end, too.

The Fantasy: This is another builder and works itself up into a frenzy and then returns to be rebuilt again. It's an excellent song. This is one of my favorite tracks on this disc. I can hear the crowd responding to this one on a lot of levels.

Savior: There is an interesting recording at the beginning of this track. This song is a great change of pace on the disc, and begins at a pace and for the most part, stays with it - like it was driven by nitro. Leto's vocals are incredible here.

From Yesterday: This song rolls in like a cool breeze, and I love it. It has great orchestration on the chorus. It's one of the songs that is worth the price of the entire disc.

The Story: They use neat keyboard effects for the opening of this. I love the chorus, with the almost whispering responses. It gives this song a ghostly appearance.

R-Evolve: On this track the most important thing I can say is… "listen to the drummer!" This song is almost tribal with the percussion. And you add that to a softer number and this makes a truly winning combination.

A Modern Myth: They use an acoustic song for the conclusion of this - nice touch. I do like the violins that are included here. This is a very good tune to close the disc.
