Wishbone Ash
Eyes Wide Open: True Tales of a Wishbone Ash Warrior written by Andy Powell
Review by Gary Hill
To some degree, this book reminds me a bit of Bill Bruford’s recent autobiography/memoir. It has the same kind of personal touch and stream of memory sequence. To me that approach makes for a very interesting and fun reading experience. It worked for his book and it works for this one. Andy Powell talks about his childhood, formative years listening to radio and the history of Wishbone Ash, all from his perspective. The book addresses the economics of the music business, life in the music business and all kinds of inner working stories. I would say that the most important thing about this book is that Powell comes across as genuine. You really believe what he has to say because it feels like he’s really opening up and telling you what happened from his unique perspective. I’d highly recommend this to Wishbone Ash fans, but also to anyone who just likes to read biographical books by musicians. This is one of the better specimens of the bunch.
