Steve Hackett

A Genesis in My Bed; Steve Hackett - The Autobiography

Review by Gary Hill

This book is such a classy product. In fact, it's so impressive in terms of the presentation that I felt compelled to do one of our YouTube bonus feature videos about it. You'll find the link to that at the end of this review.

Now, it's important to note that I have the British edition. I have heard, but can't verify, that while the version I have has a section of glossy pages for the photos, many of which are in color that on the US edition those pages are standard paper and the photos are all in black and white. As I said, I can't verify this, but I do know that when I publish books in premium quality (basically the settings) they have to be changed to standard for distribution, so I'm guessing it's true. If true, it's also a shame.

So, about the book itself. This is a short book, and therefore a quick read. Hackett has a way of making you feel like he's just sitting down with you, telling you his story. I have to think at lot of that is his personality. I've corresponded with him a bit a few times, including an email interview, and he comes across as just a very kind and genuinely nice person. So, for me this book reads exactly like I'd think it would coming from him.

I suppose one could have hoped for a bit deeper look at things, but for me the affable nature and genuine quality more than makes up for that. This is a very pleasant reading experience, and I highly recommend it, as long as you don't go into it expecting to get something other than what it is. It's a series of stories about the life of Steve Hackett told by the man himself. Personally, I love it.
