Jon Anderson
Olias of Sunhillow: 2 Disc Remastered & Expanded Edition
Review by Gary Hill
Olias of Sunhillow was Jon Anderson's first solo album. It's gotten several releases over the years, but this might be the real deal - the best of the bunch. The set has been remastered, and it sounds great, but that's only one part of the picture. First, you get the original stereo remix remastered on the CD that is the first disc of the set, and it does sound incredibly good. There is a second disc, though, a DVD. That disc includes a surround sound mix (actually with two different options for playing it) of the album along with a high resolution mix. All options have some minor graphics of cover art while playing the DVD.
Perhaps even more impressive, though, is the packaging. The full digipack uses art work from the original vinyl LP, reproducing and adapting it in fine fashion. There are two booklets included. One features a lot of new information, again featuring the original artwork in a new way, making it seem like it could have all been included in the original release. The second booklet includes all the lyrics for the album, again done with the original artwork and design at its heart. This packaging is impressive enough that it has earned a spot as one of our Music Street Journal bonus feature videos.
It should be noted that I have previously reviewed an early version of this release. Since the songs are all the same, I am using the track reviews from that article as the basis for the track reviews here for the sake of consistency. I'm also only including the track review for one disc, since it's the same on both. It's worth revisiting what I said about the album as a whole in that review, too, so here it is: "When the members of Yes all went off to do solo albums after Relayer, Jon Anderson delivered Olias of Sunhillow. In so many ways it was the most ambitious of the discs. In the first place Anderson pretty much single-handedly wrote and performed all the music on the album. If that wasn’t enough the disc is a concept album that seeks to relate a complex science fiction / fantasy tale. It is also one heck of a great piece of progressive rock that holds up as every bit as powerful today as when it was released."
