The X Brothers

Solid Citizens

Review by Gary Hill

Featuring Blue Oyster Cult`s Joe Bouchard, it is no wonder that much of this album has BOC tendencies. This is a very solid rock disc that occasionally rises to the point of greatness.

The X Brothers are Joe Bouchard, Andy Hilfiger, Billy Hilfiger (both brothers of clothing designer Tommy Hilfiger) and Jimmy Cacala.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: The Early Years Volume 4 at garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-The-Early-Years.

Track by Track Review
Pray
This is a brief instrumental guitar based cut with incidental voices.
Hot Time In Hell
A playful intro gives way to a blues rocker with strong BOC elements. The chorus to this one is quite catchy.
On Fire With Love
Another strong rocker, this one again feels a lot like the Cult, and the chorus has a classic `70`s rock feel.
Love's A Killer
Again Blue Oyster Cult styled, this is quite a strong rock ballad. The arrangement to this song is very inspired.
Pearls
Starting in a mysterious, enigmatic rock style, the piece jumps to more solid hard rock territory. This is a stand out number with many varied textures.
Inner Bit
A brief, spooky and haunting instrumental, this one starts in a somewhat disorganized jam structure before moving into eastern leanings.
Wild Ones
This is another strong rocker in the BOC tradition.
Dreamland
Entertaining, but not extremely spectacular, this is a charmingly unpolished rock cut.
The Van Song
A quirky intro leads into a jumpy high-energy rocker that seems to show slight elements of Janes Addiction alongside the stronger Blue Oyster Cult leanings.
Dream Machine
This is a wonderfully intricate and progish piece based in the more sedate and thoughtful BOC mode (like Astronomy).
End Post
End Post is another brief and odd instrumental number.
All Things Paramount
This is a solid rocker in a somewhat bluesy mode.
Run For the Sun
Another BOC influenced rocker, this one is quite strong.
