The Coloursound

Review by Gary Hill

New York City’s The Coloursound might not be completely originally, but they are totally entertaining. The group have a sound that blends classic rock and modern sounds into a mélange that’s very tasty and tasteful. It’s a great sound that truly works well – even if it’s not overly original. This EP is a great way to get a feel for the varied sounds of the group.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2009  Volume 6 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Slowdown
Keyboards open this and hold it for a time. The musical concept builds on a mellow approach until the guitars enter and bring us into an alternative pop vibe that's quite effective. The powered up choruses up the ante even more. The strings add quite a bit to the arrangement on this number. It's a classy tune.
We're On Fire
While this leads off a lot like the song proper on the last one, it drops down to a fairly stripped back, almost emo sort of jam for the main song. The cut has some more powerful moments and textures as it carries forward. It’s a good track and while not as strong as the opener (or as original) it presents a definite bit of variety. There is a killer screaming hard rocking segment later, though.
Strange City
The downside of this cut is that it’s not that unique or original. It’s also not as strong as the previous two. The upside, though, is that it’s entertaining and there’s a killer guitar presence and jam band motif mid-track.
Get Even
Much of this is fairly generic – that doesn’t mean it’s not good, though. There are some space rock elements to this, too that help to elevate it.
The Waiting Hours
Another hard rocker this seems to combine old school rock and roll with more modern alternative rock sounds. It’s a little on the generic side, but yet quite cool. Parents should be warned about the lyrics, though.
Reclaim
Here we have the title track, a keyboard dominated ballad-like number that’s bouncy and rather fun – even if it’s sedate. I’m not sure it’s the best choice for closer, but it’s a piece of variety and a good tune.
