James Nixon

Live in Europe

Review by Gary Hill

Combining blues, gospel, R & B and soul, James Nixon never fails to entertain. He pulls off a real sincerity all the way through the performance and everyone in his band does a great job. If you like soulful bluesy music, you just can’t get much better than this.

Track by Track Review
Trying To Hold On

There’s a lot of funk on this soulful jam. It’s a killer tune that also has hints of B.B. King built into it. There is some seriously hot instrumental work built into this tasty number.

One More Chance With You
A mellower number, this is a lot bluesier. It’s also very tasty.
Please Come Back To Me
This is even more pure blues and the comparisons to B.B. King are appropriate here, too. There’s some killer retro textured instrumental work in the mix here.
The Best In Town
A twelve bar blues, there is some great slide guitar on this. Overall it has some great retro stylings.
Oh Baby
A soulful number, this is more R & B than pure blues. Comparisons to James Brown would be appropriate.
Sundown Blues
B.B. King seems to be on the menu here. This slow blues is awesome. It’s one of my favorites of the set.
Tongue Tied Blues
There’s a bit of funk on this soulful number. It’s got a great R & B groove to it. It’s another strong one and a real jam.
Love at First Sight
A slow, soulful groove makes up this number. It’s quite tasty.
Baby Right Now
This one’s a more energized cut that’s very soulful. It’s about a man contemplating suicide because he lost his woman.
Stand Up
There’s a soulful groove to this Christian themed number. As one might imagine, it’s also got some gospel woven into the sound.

People Get Ready
This is a great song, no matter who is doing it. Nixon and his band put in an inspired telling of the track and it works extremely well.
