Lisa Marie Presley

Storm & Grace

Review by Diane Hill

Not being an Elvis fan, I didn’t expect too much from this CD. I was pleasantly surprised. Her voice is smooth and sultry and makes me want to keep listening.  The harmonies grab me and keep me wanting more. She sounds like Chris Isaak in some places.  I find different nuances every time I listen to it.

Track by Track Review
Over Me
This is upbeat yet sung with Presley’s beautiful sultry voice.  It has a bit of a rock/country feel.
You Ain’t Seen Nothin’ Yet
The chorus is so hard driving and wonderful and the words are great. This one is great to sing to in the car. It’s dark and brooding, but an excellent song.  The way she manipulates her vocals, coaxing them out of some dark place, is beautiful.
Weary
I had to listen to this several times before it  “clicked,” with me but it was a pleasure getting to know this song.  Presley sings this as though she’s really lived the words.
Soften the Blows
This song has everything: harmony, great lyrics, and a hauntingly beautiful melody.  It also has a somewhat country feel to it. It just makes me feel good when I listen to it.
So Long
I love the harmony on this one. It’s upbeat, has a good melody, and the lyrics are awesome!
Un-Break
The beat on this song is great and the lyrics are totally relatable. This is a song I can listen to over and over.  In fact I’ve done that.
Close to the Edge
This one moves slowly and is kind of hard to get a hold of but it’s still a good song. It reminds of songs that used to be sung in dimly lit bars or nightclubs by beautiful women in slinky cocktail dresses.
Storm of Nails
The harmony is really good and I like the piano that sounds like it’s being played several octaves above the guitar. It works really well.
How Do You Fly This Plane
This is my least favorite song but the others are so good, that’s not necessarily a bad thing.  It moves a lot slower than any of the other songs and she sings mostly in a deep, earthy kind of voice.
Sticks and Stones
The lyrics in this cut make reference to her father without mentioning his name.  It’s done really well.
Storm and Grace
This has a definite county sound to it.  I’m not a big country music fan but she mixes it with rock and makes it work.
