Blood

Review by Kat Heitzman

Upon first listening to this CD, I thought, “Wow, this is all over the place. Musically and vocally and I really like that." This is not a background music listen. It is really innovative, and mixed synthesized elements make this a very cool new rock CD. The cover art is intense and the photos have a gothic quality.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2013  Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Rise with Me

This is an intro to the CD, not really a song.

Blood

Probably the best song on this CD, the title track has a very re-playable sound. Maria Brink’s voice reminds me of Otep and the music does as well in this song. The only difference is her voice has much more range. Blood is a thrashing, chanting, synthesized, constantly changing feast of a song.

Adrenalize

This song has some very grungy awesome guitar. The lyrics, “music,” “love,” and “sex” are chanted throughout this cut.

Who*e
This dirty little tune has some great guitar and surprisingly good lyrics.
You’re Gonna Listen

The title says it all, “you’re gonna listen!” There is a lot of cool guitar work in this song and it is mixed well with some synthesizers.

It Is Written

This is not really a song, but more of a poem that is whispered to some cool effects.

Burn
A little slower than the rest of the CD, this cut is more of a ballad. Don’t let that fool you, though. It still has some great guitar and drums that pick it up midway through the song.
Scarlet

At first this song seems very out of place on this CD, as it has a totally different sound than the rest. It is slower, although the vocals in it have a great range and make this one very well done.

Aries

Another poem that is spoken quietly, this lasts 41 seconds.

From the Ashes

I can see this track being played at an arena live and loud. It has a lot of production quality that would make it a fun song to see performed live.

Beast Within

Possibly my second favorite number on this CD, this is also a cut that would be performed live to pump up the audience. The lyrics are very well written, as they are on all of the songs. True poetry lies between the lines of music from this artist. I just love the sharp, husky vocals.

Comanche

The heavy intro to this leads to a very Otep styled song. The bass really stands out and compliments the grungy style of this song.

The Blood Legion

While listening to this song, you can almost feel the static from the ethereal feel of the music along with the vocals. It is very moving, musically. Even if you have no idea what she is saying, the music has a lot of emotion.

11:11

A very slow almost gospel song ends this CD.
