Hell Cat Stomp

Review by Gary Hill

With a solid slice of old school rock and more, this is a fun album. It has a good balance between male and female vocals. They create a nice mix of sounds here, covering a wide swath of the genre possibilities. This thing just oozes old school cool and entertainment.

Track by Track Review
(This Train Is Going) Straight To Hell

Here we’ve got an old time country type number. The guitar fills land it closer to rockabilly, though. It’s a fun number, although it feels a little slow to me.

Black Betty
Yes, this is the same song Ram Jam did all those years ago. This rendition, though, has more of a roots rock kind of vibe. It’s more modern than the opener was. It’s a cool rocker with female vocals driving it.
Shake It on Down
The male vocals return here. This is a definite rockabilly number. The emphasis is on the rock end of the equation, though. It’s a bit like a cross between The Stray Cats and George Thorogood. I really love the guitar soloing on this.
When the Levee Breaks
Many probably are familiar with the Led Zeppelin version of this old chestnut. The female vocals return here, and this has a real down home vibe to it. Those vocals really sell this, though.
St. James Infirmary Blues
There is a punky, old time rock and roll vibe here. It’s got a bit of a Cramps vibe to it, too. The guitar solo really works. The male vocals here are among the best of the set.
Hell Cat Stomp
The title track is a smoking hot, guitar driven instrumental. It’s no big change, but it’s a lot of fun.
I’m Wild about That Thing
Old school blues is the general vibe here. This has female vocals and works quite well. It’s accessible and entertaining.
See That My Grave Is Kept Clean
Blues and old time rock and roll merge here. The vocal performance and guitar soloing are both exceptional. This is one of my favorite cuts on the disc, actually.
Send Me to the Lectric Chair
Slow moving, old time blues mixed with country, this is another strong tune.
That’s It, That’s All
No big changes, this is another fun cut.
House of the Rising Sun
I’ve always loved this song. I like this version. It’s quite close to the Animals rendition. The female voice definitely changes it, though.
Hard Moon Boogie
This instrumental is old school for sure. It’s also got some great guitar soloing.
