BADWORM

Review by Gary Hill

This is a hip hop set, but it’s kind of unusual for hip hop. For one thing, at times it gets into mystical territory one doesn’t expect in that genre. Secondly, some of the music wanders into that direction, too. This set would be a great “bridging” concept to get people who don’t like hip hop exposed to the genre, and perhaps interested in it. Yet, it should also appeal to those who already like rapping.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2015  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
The Crimson Liquid

There is a mysterious kind of magical vibe to the whole song here. That includes both the more energetic section and particularly the really mellow bit of weirdness. This is a cool way to start things in style. It’s unusual to hear this kind of magik lyrical theme in hip hop. You expect that kind of thing to be metal or prog or electronic.

Depth of Death (There is No)
More the kind of thing one expects from hip hop, this is still exceptional in terms of both the music and the rapping. I like the rhythmic vibe and the melodies.
Pump Fake – Face Forward
I love the dreamy musical textures on this. I also like how the energy of the rap contrasts with that.
Insightful
There is a dreamy element here. This is another solid hip hop number, too.
Nadir Predator
Although this is more mainstream hip hop, that change lends some variety. I like the jazzy edge the horn sounds bring to the table.
Morphing (Anthem of the Animus)
A magical musical element returns on this cut. It’s a nice way to bookend the set. This is actually one of my favorite cuts here, too.
