The Deepest Pain

Review by Gary Hill

The main thing here is the guitar. At least, that’s the biggest selling point and consistency. Beyond that, the music ranges from blues to funk and more. This is a strong set for sure. That guitar really steals the show, though.

Track by Track Review
Ain't the Same

An old school blues number, this gets a classic sounding treatment. The guitar soloing on this number is scorching hot and so tasty.

Master Mechanic
There is a more dropped back sound on this. It reminds me quite a bit of Dr. John or Captain Beefheart. It has some killer slide guitar, too. This is like old time back porch blues in a lot of ways.
Don't Drink with a Drunk
This blues number has some definite funk in the mix. Beyond that, it almost seems like a cross stylistically of the first two songs.
The Deepest Pain
The title track combines the blues sounds of the rest of the set with a soulful groove and some jazz elements. I love the organ sound on this thing. The whole piece just oozes a retro cool.
Got to Have You
Although all the songs feature some killer guitar work, this one really takes the prize in that regard. It’s a fast paced, vintage styled electric blues piece. This is one of the best cuts here and also has some of that great organ sound.
Six Blade Knife
This blues groove is tasty. It isn’t one of my favorites, though. It’s not that there’s anything wrong with this piece. It’s just that everything so far has been so strong, it’s tough competition.
Don't Keep Fighting with Your Soul
There is no huge change here. That said, I love the organ and the guitar on this one. The guitar solo is particularly noteworthy and the whole song is just based on a great groove and sound.
Vooing You
This is another that makes me think of Captain Beefheart a bit. It’s another classy song for sure.
If You Got a Good Woman
The slide guitar steals the show on this scorching blues tune.
Hurricane
Another retro tinged blues rocker, this has some psychedelia in the mix.
Give Me My Blues
Faster paced, there is a bit of funk on this killer blues rocker. The bass solo mid-track really brings the funk to the forefront.
Serious as a Heartattack

There are no big changes here. Instead, this is a fast paced blues groove delivered in style. It’s a high energy piece that makes for a great closer.
