Blackmore's Night

All Our Yesterdays

Review by Gary Hill

I have never heard a Blackmore’s Night album I didn’t like. This is a strong one and continues that tradition. It’s more modern in texture than some of their works. I have to say that I love their rendition of “I Got You Babe.” They really bring new life to the old chestnut. If you’ve liked Blackmore’s Night in the past, you are sure to dig this one. If you haven’t given them a try, this would be a good choice for first sampling. Yes, I know it isn’t purely prog rock, but it’s close enough and the mix of sounds here is definitely progressive.

Track by Track Review
All Our Yesterdays

At first this is mellower and intricate. Later, though, it has more energy and oomph. It’s very much a folk music meets world sounds type of song. It’s also very strong.

Allan Yn n Fan
Celtic music, rock and more merge on this catchy number. This instrumental has a lot of energy. It also has some great melodies and crunchy guitar.
Darker Shade of Black
Very much a progressive rock piece, this is well-titled as it shares a lot of melodic territory with “A Whiter Shade of Pale.” It’s similar in terms of musical style, too. This is an instrumental, though. It gets into some great old world music, too.
Long Long Time
This  cover song  is folk like. It has plenty of Celtic and old world elements at play. It’s quite a pretty and powerful ballad.
Moonlight Shadow
A melodic rocker, this is energized. It’s also very much AOR progressive rock. I like it a lot. The guitar solo is nearly trademark Blackmore.
I Got You Babe
I absolutely love this cover of the Sonny and Cher classic hit. Musically it’s powerful. The vocals really shine, though. Candace Night’s voice sings all the part and she puts Cher to shame. This is probably my favorite song here. It’s worth the price of admission all by itself.
The Other Side

With a lot of world music in the mix, this is another that’s incredibly powerful. It makes me think of Renaissance in some ways. This is another highlight for sure. It has some really magical stuff in the musical mix. It’s another that’s pretty much certainly prog rock.

Queen's Lament
This instrumental starts mellow. It works out to more powerful music later. It’s old world in nature. It’s intricate. It’s beautiful, too.
Where Are We Going from Here
Another that’s prog rock for certain, this energized rocker is so cool. It has great musical moments and an engaging vocal line. Blackmore gets to rock out, and at times this makes me think of some early Rainbow.
Will O' the Wisp
Another prog rocker, this is energized, melodic and very old world in nature.
Earth Wind and Sky
Pretty and intricate, this is a great mellower cut.
Coming Home
A Celtic rocker, this is energized and a lot of fun. It has some intricate instrumental work. It gets more into the rocking side of the equation later, too.
