Big Hits Live From the Last of the Breed Tour Live

Review by Gary Hill

This live album features performances with each member of the group taking turns as singer. It’s literally a collection of hits performed live. It’s mostly old school country, but there is a lot of range and some variants there. If you like the acts presented here, this is well worth having.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2016  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.

Track by Track Review
Miles and Miles of Texas - Asleep at the Wheel

There’s some great jazzy Cajun sounds built into this high energy piece. It’s a fun way to start things in style.

Make the World Go Away - Ray Price
The strings add something to this country ballad. It’s not one of my favorites of the set, but it has it charms.
For the Good Times - Ray Price
Another ballad, this is a bit too similar to the previous piece. That said, I like this one better.
Silver Wings - Merle Haggard
There’s a bit of a blues vibe to this number. It’s a strong cut.
That's the Way Love Goes - Merle Haggard
This country ballad is one of the more effective ones here.
Okie from Muskogee - Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson
This energized piece is a lot of fun.
Pancho and Lefty - Merle Haggard & Willie Nelson
With a bit of a Latin edge to it, this is a great song. It has a real expansive kind of vibe. There is a balladic aspect, but an almost rock feeling, too. It’s one of my favorites here.
Always on My Mind - Willie Nelson
Another ballad, this is classy stuff.
Mama Tried - Merle Haggard
With a fast paced energy, this is a fun tune. It’s old school country music, but also a bit modern in texture.
I Gotta Have My Baby Back - Willie Nelson, Merle Haggard and Ray Price
This hit flirts with jazz. It’s essentially a classic ballad. It’s delivered in style here. The instrumental section mdi-track brings some real Dixieland to the table.
Sing Me Back Home - Merle Haggard
Another ballad, I like this, but it’s not one of my favorites.
Crazy - Willie Nelson
This classic still holds up quite well here.
On the Road Again - Willie Nelson
You can’t mention Willie Nelson without thoughts turning to this song. This is a high energy performance of the song that works quite well.
