Blind Experiment

Review by Gary Hill

This is listed as "instrumental trip hop." Well, honestly, I don't see how this any less prog oriented than any number of electronic styles that get lumped under the prog heading. The truth is, there is a definite groove and vibe to this. It tends toward minimalism, but has a real space element at play. At times it crosses toward jazz, too. Call it what you like, but this is cool stuff.

Track by Track Review
Latent Period
The early parts of this piece are quite jazzy. The number gets more percussive later. While this is an instrumental, there is a vocal bit that's a loop that works in an almost percussive way.
Idiosyncratic Response
The weird electronic tapestries on this combine space music with a cool rhythmic structure and some rather jazzy elements at times.
Negative Control Procedure
The rhythmic structure on this is a bit odd, but also compelling. The piece has a weird electronic tapestry to it. This almost seems to occupy a zone between space music and Rock In Opposition styled stuff. There is a weird sampled horn and voice sample.
Blind Experiment
This has more of a melodic kind of space music vibe to it. It's a classy cut that works really well.
Threshold Dose
I dig the rhythmic groove on this piece. This number is perhaps more fully rhythmic than some of the rest, but it does drop to strictly melodic for a time.
Cross Tolerance
There is a cool groove to this piece. Beyond that it's precisely what you'd expect given the rest of these tapestries.
Disintegration Time
I like the percussive element on this, but the bass groove and musical sense of mystery really complete the picture.
