The Walk-A-Bout

Things Are Looking Up

Review by Gary Hill

With a name like "The Walk-A-Bout," you have to conjure up images of Australia, right? This is an Aussie-American band. They are acoustically driven rock. To me comparisons to things like Blues Traveler and Hootie and the Blowfish aren't out of the question. This is mainstream alternative rock styled stuff that works really well. This CD is less than half an hour long, leaving the listener wanting more. They say you should always leave your audience in that state, so it's successful in the regard. It's an entertaining disc, too. So, they succeed on both of those levels.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) form in Music Street Journal: 2018  Volume 4. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2018.

Track by Track Review
Things Are Looking Up
Drums lead things out here. They work to a cool fusion sort of jam from there. The vocals come in over the top bringing more of a mainstream alternative rock vibe. I really love some of the instrumental work on this energetic melodic rocker. This is classy stuff. There is a bluesy rocking break with some harmonica work later in the tune.
That's Just The Way It Goes
A bit slower and mellower, this isn't quite a ballad. It's a classy rock tune with some intriguing melodic rock textures.
By My Side
Another slow moving melodic rocker, this has an almost dreamy quality to it. It really has some soaring elements. It's a classy alternative rock styled piece with plenty of nods to classic music. The guitar solo is particularly meaty.
Consequences
Coming in with a lot more energy, this is a powerhouse rocker. It is mainstream music that's catchy and so cool. I dig the fast paced groove on this. There is more harmonica on this tune and some cool almost jazzy guitar soloing. This thing is one of my favorites here.
Oasis

Percussion leads this piece out, and acoustic guitar rises up from there. There is a dreamy, soaring kind of vibe to this. The cut leans toward progressive rock. The percussion remains prominent. There is some cool bass work on this song, too.

Drifting Tide
Another with a melodic rock groove, this is a solid piece. Perhaps it's not as strong as some of the rest, but it's still quite cool. I love the little breaks on the number. This has some fun stuff in the mix.
