When I'm Gone (for George Michael) (digital single)

Review by Gary Hill

Adult contemporary music like this is not necessarily my kind of thing. That said, this song is powerful and packed with a lot of beauty and style. It's a strong cut that manages to rise beyond its genre in some ways. Yet, it should still appeal to those who regard the style with more reverence than I do.

This review is available in book (paperback and hardcover) in Music Street Journal: 2019  Volume 5. More information and purchase links can be found at: garyhillauthor.com/Music-Street-Journal-2019.

When I'm Gone (for George Michael)
Piano and synthesizer are on display as this starts. The vocals come in bringing more of a theatrical approach. Classical strings and other elements join after the first verse to fill the arrangement out a bit. It starts rocking out a bit more after the second verse. This is piece that's packed with emotion and power.  There are times when this makes me think of a more theatrical Elton John.
