Grapefruit Sound Lab

Gina Volpe & Grapefruit Sound Lab - Shine (Red House Mix)

Review by Gary Hill

The idea here is that Grapefruit Sound Lab has created a remix of punk artist Gina Volpe's tune. I should mention that I'm not sure if this should go under her name or theirs. Ultimately since it was sent to be along with a number of GSL's music, I'm landing it under that artist name. Before listening to this, I gave the original a listen, and it's definitely not a punk song. That said, I've heard some of the rest of her stuff, and she does qualify as punk, albeit a newer, more polished form. The original version of this, though, has a more electronic pop produced sound. The main difference from that tune and this one is that the focus here is more on dance music. The energy game is upped, and the tune grooves a bit more.

Track by Track Review
Shine (Red House Mix)
There is a real EDM vibe that comes into the track from the start. That sort of energy and mood remain throughout the tune. The vocals work pretty well. I dig the echoed bit later in the number. The only issue I have with the vocals are when they get over-processed, but that's a function of the original, not this remix. In fact, I think that I actually prefer the vocal arrangement on this version. It seems to have a bit more punch. The musical arrangement on the original, while slower, has more of an organic quality that I prefer. That said, this remix works well, too.
