Kansas Live at Taste of Chicago, 2000 Review by Gary Hill Kansas is a band that started as one of the premiere progressive rock bands of America. As many prog bands did, they drifted into the sea of pop music, diluting their prog sensibilities and gaining wide market appeal for their efforts.
This live show proves that Kansas is back to the prog roots that made them great. They took the Chicago crowd on a musical journey that was sure to please both the casual fan and long time devotee. Steve Walsh was the prime showman here, moving out from behind his keys on numerous occasions for a frantic front man performance. The set included almost exclusively the proggier tracks of the group's catalog. The notable exceptions were the tried and true ballad "Dust in the Wind" and "Hold On". For this reviewer the highlight of the show was the awesome vocal performance starting "Carry On Wayward Son" --- stunning!
