Spock's Beard

Live in Chicago IL, August, 2000

Review by Steve Alspach

Opening for Dream Theater, Spock's Beard played a surprisingly short set. With their new album, "V" due out shortly, one would think that the band would have played a few songs from that album, but it wasn't to be. They went back in their early catalog, playing "Walking on the Wind" and "The Light." The latter featured a smoking "key-tar" solo from Ryo Okumoto, but just as the band was really hitting its groove, they abruptly stopped, and that was that. Given that it was only 7.25 in the evening, and there was no air conditioning in the Riviera, one wonders if the band decided to call it an early night. In fact, the air conditioning did not come on until about 10 or 15 minutes into the Dream Theater show, and then was off at the beginning of their encore. You would think a top concert venue would be able to handle something like air conditioning, but it didn't make things easy for the band or their fans, whom DT singer James LaBrie gave thanks to for such a nice response under less-than-perfect circumstances.
