Lazarus A.D.

Live in Kenosha, WI January, 2011

Review by Peter Lizano

Just before Lazarus A.D. hit the road to promote their new album Black River Flows, they played a hometown CD release show in Kenosha, Wisconsin. After gaining some success for their first release, Onslaught, they decided to play once again for the locals to celebrate the release of their second album, Black River Flows. Being from around the border area, I had no clue what to expect from a venue I had never been to.  When I got there, the place was sold-out and the hall packed-in tight; it reminded me of a rental hall and wondered if I was in the right place.  After a few minutes, there was no doubt this was an old-school metal show for true fans of Lazarus A.D. and they came full force to support their guys.

With a few technical difficulties to start, the show ripped through a few songs from the new album before having to stop twice due to drum kit issues from the insane beating, drummer, Ryan Shutler was giving.  Once those issues were resolved, the set kicked into overdrive with songs off of Onslaught and Black River Flows. Jeff Paulick showed a true knack for being a front man and providing a deep bass that had the floor shaking, along with the crowd going insane each time he screamed out to them. I have been to many shows, but this was the first time I felt a venue move as much as the Danish Hall did.

With the guitar playing of Alex Lackner and Dan Gapen, 80s style thrash fret board work had the heads banging.  At one point, Paulick told the crowd they would be filming a video from this show which brought out the biggest mosh pit of the night. Lazuras A.D. definitely puts on a very tight and explosive set for their fans to enjoy. I do have to say, it ended almost too abruptly and left everyone wanting more when it was all over.

As I left, I have to say, this was one of the better metal shows I have seen in a while and if the support they get from their hometown fans can infect into thrash fans around the world, you can look for bigger things to come for Lazarus A.D..
