Leigh Marble

Live in Portland, Oregon, March 2012

Review by Larry Toering

After only seeing Leigh Marble once, I can say he translates his music to the stage with an effortless approach that all comes off so naturally. It's like he doesn't even need to rehearse. This is the mark of a great performer in my opinion. From the first compelling minute to the last, it's both a dark and moody, yet spiritually uplifting ride. One can take it light or heavy. On this night he was out with some friends to celebrate his latest CD release Where The Knives Meet The Rows. The night was perfect for celebrating its darkness, as it was a rainy one that begged for some uplifting, and that is exactly what the warm, if a bit thin, crowd got.

Joined on stage by members of the opening band for some percussion and background vocals, and more, it went from satisfyingly mellow, to wildly intense at times. I was amazed at the band’s opening performance as well, so when they joined him onstage it was welcome. Beginning the set with some new stuff, “Walk” and Marble built things up with various favorites. The music is transfixing and actually liberating if you've never had the chance to be graced by it.

The entire show I could barely move from my spot, as I remained enthusiastic and tried not to let anything disturb the vibe. A couple of highlights for me were newer tracks “Walk” and “Jack Rabbit.” Having a soft spot for the two, they both worked out better in a live setting. I'm certainly glad I made the show. This artist is something of a special singer/songwriter who I cannot recommend enough. If you're a fan of the Decemberists then you're probably already aware of him. Either way, seek him out and enjoy, and then watch for dates because they're not in abundance at this point. Marble is a force to reckon with, and once he's on your radar, good luck getting rid of his infectious presence.
