The Who

Live in Las Vegas, Nevada, August 2017

Review by Larry Toering

This trip to Vegas was stacked with stuff to do, and it started with seeing The Who at the end of their experimental residency. A Roman replica, Ceasar's Palace worked wonders for going to see such a band. The place is plush, and I already have a lot of love for Caesar's Palace for its replicated structures in the first place.

This concert was practically flawless, and I hadn’t seen them in years. In fact, I’ve never seen them without John Entwistle before. I’m not going to carry on about the players making any differences. They’ve been at this a while now, and you either care about it or you don’t, and getting out to see them like this says enough about that. It says that it doesn’t matter. Let the band play or don’t pay and show up. It was a remarkably awesome set to say the least, and I am glad I went.

They kicked off with “Who Are You,” but the only upset on the night for me was that they didn't play  “Bargain,” but perhaps they did on other nights of the residency.  It was cool to see them run through “Squeezebox” and many fan favorites, as well as adding a few deep cuts I didn’t even know. This brought something new to me, and topped it all off as a relevant presentation.

They were cordial to the audience, humorous about each other and very nostalgic about it all. That was especially true of Roger Daltrey. To be fair, both Daltrey and Pete Townshend shined at the between song banter in their own ways. It was a truly fine experience, and it added some closure for me. Ultimately, that is just one reason I went. I’m sure I’m not going to have the chance to see them again, at least not like that. So it was well worth it.
