Jethro Tull

Live at Montreux 2003 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Jethro Tull is certainly a band that needs no introduction in progressive rock (and classic rock) circles. Their unique sound and reputation for quality precedes them. Between the extensive use of flute and Ian Anderson’s trademark voice, there is no mistaking the sound of Jethro Tull – no one else really sounds like them. When you add in Anderson’s stage presence and between song banter, there’s no question that you won’t find another experience quite like a Jethro Tull show. Well, here we have a DVD of the band’s performance at the 2003 edition of the Montreux Jazz Festival. Beyond the usual comment that I don’t see them fitting into that category by any stretch of the imagination, I have nothing but praise for this video. The video and audio on this one may well be the best of the series and Anderson, Martin Barre, Doane Perry and the rest of the group were in fine form on that evening. All of this leads to a set that is a “must have” for all fans of Jethro Tull. I’ll get more into the individual songs in my review of the companion CD, but for now, let’s just say that this is probably the quintessential video of the band. Some bonus materials would have been nice, but when the main concert footage is this good, who can quibble?
