I have to admit, I’m a bit like a lot of people out there. I’ve always had a deep respect for Isaac Hayes (who wouldn’t love that voice?) but I haven’t really followed his music career. I always pictured that his whole repertoire was based in funky R & B. Well, the truth of the matter is, at least in this DVD, he really does belong at the Montreux Jazz Festival because this is some of the coolest, funk based jazz you’ll find. This is really the real deal. With modern video and audio technology in place to capture the show, you can be sure that this is a very enjoyable viewing and listening experience. Now that I know the truth about Hayes’ music I’m likely to check out a lot more of his stuff. The voice was enough to catch my attention, but the music really held me. I guess I should also mention the obvious. Those who want to hear the theme from “Shaft” will find it here. That in itself will make this worth the price of admission for some.
