A Tribute to Edith Piaf: Live at Montreux 2004 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

It's always good to see an appearance at the Montreux Jazz Festival that's actually jazz. Don't get me wrong, they have a lot of great music there, but a lot of it isn't jazz. No one could accuse this performance of not fitting the title. A group of vocalist are gathered to pay tribute to the legendary cabaret singer Edith Piaf. The result is an intriguing show that is told in French (with the exception of one song that's in English). All the performers put strong showings and the whole set is entertaining and intriguing. We even get a couple instrumentals from the accomplished jazz musicians that make up the band. This one should entertain fans of old school jazz. Those who aren't familiar with Piaf's work will certainly get an idea of the sound of the woman - albeit interpreted by other performers. I'd definitely recommend this DVD.
