Quincy Jones

50 Years In Music: Live At Montreux 1996 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Quincy Jones is a musical legend. For those of us who have come to our musical maturity since he quite playing it might hard to grasp his importance as a musician, but this DVD should go along ways towards bringing the picture into focus. Let's make this clear from the onset, Jones does not play here, but rather directs a group of musicians through performances of his pieces. After a brain aneurysm and follow up surgeries in the 1970's Jones quit playing in accordance with his doctors' recommendations. That's how his focus shifted towards production. He still has a love of the music, though and you can really get a taste of the sounds he's brought us over the years with this DVD. The music is performed by a house band and the Northern Illinois University Jazz Band (yes, that's the school that recently suffered a shooting incident) and the music is top notch. Special guests here include Phil Collins, Chaka Khan, David Sanborn and Toots Thielmans. If you like jazz and would like to see the impact that Jones has had on music, this is a must have. As with the entire series, this DVD is well filmed and looks and sounds great. You can't go wrong here.
