Doro

Classic Diamonds DVD

Review by Gary Hill

The first thing that's apparent with this DVD is that you get a lot for your money. There are two full concerts one 43 minutes long and one 61 minutes, but that's only the beginning. There is also an interview segment called "Impressions of the Tour" that runs 15 minutes - granted it's in German with English subtitles. Then there is over another hour of extras including the making of the video "Let Love Rain On Me" (along with the video itself, live footage from the TV show Rockpalast and more. All in all, just in terms of amount of material for your hard earned cash, this one is a winner. Truth be told, all the footage is very good quality, too. You also get live guest appearances from Chris Caffery of Savatage and Blaze Bayley formerly of Iron Maiden - bonus!

I guess I do have a few issues with the DVD, but from that first paragraph you can see that the positives far outweigh the negatives. First, I've been trying for a while to remember who was the first metal band to play with a symphony orchestra (The Scorpions, maybe?), but I really wish they had never done it - or at least other bands hadn't decided that they needed to follow suit. You know, I like classical music, and I like metal, and I am a huge progressive rock fan - but more times than not having an orchestra with heavy metal takes away from the power and energy of the metal, diluting it into something that's less than what it started as. While the orchestrations here work better than a lot of them - and everything is entertaining, I really think these performances would have been better sans the orchestra. Doro's music and voice are spot on, though - the orchestra just steals too much of the thunder. The only other complaint here is that since there are two shows presented here there is some repetition of material - still, it's good material - so that's only so bad.

All in all, you won't get a much better bang for the buck than you will with this one. The music is nearly great, there is a lot of stuff included and it's good metal. If you are a fan of Doro you really should have this one. Savatage and Maiden completists certainly need it, too. Metal fans in general can certainly enjoy this, as well.
