Classic Albums: The Doors DVD

Review by Gary Hill

You just can't go wrong with this DVD series. They start off by picking only albums that truly deserve the "classic" label - and that's a great thing. Then they go about creating a look inside the album creation in a way that you probably have never had access to before - unless of course you were a fly on the wall in one of these sessions - but most of us weren't.

In any event, this time around they've turned their attention on the killer debut disc by the Doors. We get interview segments with all three remaining Doors (remember, an interview with Ray Manzarek is also available in audio form in our members area - although not the same interviews featured here) and engineer Bruce Botnick. All of these interviews give insights into the whole process of creating the disc, with each of the people bringing their own take - and in many ways these are quite diverse philosophically - and that's a great way to get a number of angles on this historically important release. They even include interviews with some who were touched by the disc (although not involved in the creation), like Henry Rollins and Perry Farrell.

We get demonstrations by Robbie Krieger showing the mechanics of many of the guitar parts. Seven of the eleven tracks from the disc are featured in this documentary. All in all, it's a great addition to the series and a "must have" for all fans of The Doors. I'd hazard to say that if you are into classic rock, whether you consider yourself a Doors fan or not, you should definitely pick this one up. You won't be sorry.
