Madonna

An American Artist DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This might be the weakest DVD in this series – and not so much because of this product itself as due to the other material out there. Here’s the rub – this is an unauthorized documentary. That said, all the rest of the DVD’s in this series are, too. That means that there is no insider’s access to the artist or use of any of Madonna’s music. When you take that into consideration this is actually an informative and interesting look at one of the more influential (or at least controversial) artists to come around the pike in a while. As I alluded to in the opening sentence the real problem is not with this particular DVD. The real problem is that there is so much better material out there covering the subject matter. Honestly, with many of the acts in the series the documentary on Locomotive is the only (or at least one of a small number) video covering that particular artist in this way. The problem with this one is that Madonna has probably been documented more than just about any other artist from her era. So, the bulk of this stuff is available elsewhere and in better products. The end statement then is that taken by itself this is a good, but not great documentary. The true weakness comes with the question – do we really need another Madonna documentary? How you answer that query will really influence how you feel about this video more than anything else.
