Girl Done Good: a Documentary Review DVD

This DVD comes in the "Under Review" series of DVD's. I really admire this series as one of the better unauthorized documentary series out there. This particular release is good, but perhaps not on the level of the rest of the series. Don't get me wrong, we do get journalists analyzing Winehouse's music. It gives an intriguing insight into both the well-known and not so well-known. But as opposed to other releases in this series we only get positive comments. There is no critical commentary at all. It leads one to wonder why they couldn't have found some folks to give critical analysis who weren't part of the Winehouse fan club.
The other issue here is that it seems that Winehouse hasn't been around long enough to warrant one of these releases. True, until seeing this, I wasn't aware that her recent chart topper wasn't her debut, but come on, she only has two albums out. That lack of material and history has this film feeling a bit like it's stretching things out to have enough to fill out its time.
So, the end result here is this - we have a darned good DVD here. It is not without its problems, though. For one, they seem to have assembled journalists who are signed to Winehouse's PR team to provide the "critical commentary." And, two, with only two discs to her name it seems that - despite all the controversy and her obvious talent - Winehouse might not have been the best choice for a documentary like this at this point in her career. Still, if you'd like to know more about a chart topping star, this is a great place to get your fix.
