Steel Pulse
Door of No Return DVD
Review by Gary Hill
Those who are into the reggae scene are probably quite familiar with Steel Pulse. Those, like myself, who have a more casual interest in the genre will most surely have heard of them, even if they haven’t actually heard them. This documentary will certainly go a long ways towards creating a great introduction to the band. It will also shed new light on them for those who are devotees. Such is the beauty of this. The film is focused around a tour the group did of Africa. It manages to showcase the group’s musical talent – and we get live footage from the tour to round that out – but goes a lot further, too. We get to know these musicians in a way that is not often possible in such films. It really lends an understanding to a lot of the emotional and lyrical power of the group. This is one of the better music documentaries out there and will be a great addition to the collections of both hardcore Steel Pulse fans and more casual reggae fans.
