The Pixies

Live At The Paradise In Boston DVD

Review by Gary Hill

You have to really give The Pixies credit. It’s not often that a group can take such an odd combination of sounds and turn it into something so very catchy. Such is the strength of the Pixies. I’ve always had a special place in my musical heart for this outfit, and this DVD is a real treat. First off you get a well-filmed show from 2004 in front of a crowd of only 200 people. Their blend of punk rock, surf music, alternative rock and other styles is well received and from this performance you’d never known that they had taken any time off (they had just reunited from a long time away). They sound on top of their game and just about as perfect as you can possibly imagine them being. This show alone would be worth the price of admission for any and all fans of The Pixies, but they weren’t content with just giving us this treat. Now, that’s actually kind of an important statement because the additional material here is not as purely great. Make no mistake, this gig from the early days of the band in 1986 is another smoking performance. They were on fire! The only problem is that the video is pretty bad. The sound quality doesn’t suffer much, but the image looks extremely grainy and was obviously shot on someone’s camcorder. Still, for the archival purposes alone it’s worth having. Besides, this one is just the toy inside the cereal box – the main concert is the food that you’ll come back to over and over again to satisfy your hunger for The Pixies.
