Pete York's Super Drumming, Vol. 3

Review by Gary Hill

This is quite a cool DVD. While much of the music is pure jazz I've included it in the progressive rock section because Bill Bruford, Simon Phillips and Cozy Powell all appear here and have worked in prog rock. This is just some purely incredible music captured in magical performances. Sure, the drumming shines, but so does everything else, from the stage set to the video and audio quality to the rest of the musicians. This is one incredible collection of music and live performances. Fans of jazz are highly advised to get this. So are drummers and drum fans and anyone who enjoys great music. That's probably just about everybody. The other drummers (besides York and those mentioned previously) here include jazz great Louie Bellson, Mark Brezicki, Gerry Brown, Billy Cobham, Jon Hisemann, Dave Mattacks, Nippy Noya, Zak Starkey (otherwise known as the son of Ringo Starr) and Ed Thigpen.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2008  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
