Jethro Tull

Living With The Past

Review by Greg Olma

Jethro Tull have not released a lot of concert video material. Slipstream was their first but not much has come out since. Living With The Past is mostly a live show that is cut up into songs with each one getting a little interview segment beforehand. Mixed into this set is Ian Anderson playing “Someday The Sun Won’t Shine For You” in a pub and another tune with a group of classical musicians in a living room setting. Although we Tull fans are starved for concert material and we should be happy with anything, I would have preferred if the show was caught more "in concert" style and not a collection of tunes where some of them were not even from the main show. I will say this though, the song selection is first rate. Sure, you get the always present “Aqualung” and “Locomotive Breath” but the hits are the minority here. Songs like “Jack In The Green” and “Hunt By Numbers” are really what the die-hard fans are after and Jethro Tull deliver.

The bonus material here is quite good also. First up are 2 clips with Ian Anderson collaborating on stage with Uriah Heep and Fairport Convention. The photo gallery is decent with pictures both on and off stage. They also included a bonus cut of “Beside Myself” but with 3 choices of view (from the back all the way to the side of the stage). The pub footage must have been more extensive because they added “My Sunday Feeling” in the bonus footage section. Add in a short interview section with the Tull guys and a DVT public service commercial and you get a pretty well rounded package. Although I would have done the main concert differently, the overall DVD is well worth having.
