Review by Gary Hill

I wouldn’t be reviewing this DVD if I thought that it was a total waste. We don’t do negative reviews – if we don’t like something more than dislike it we just won’t cover it. That said, this is probably the worst DVD in the series. The problems start with the DVD cover. This says that it’s “an authorized biography,” (as you can see in the big letters) but when you actually watch the video you find out that it’s actually an “unauthorized biography.” Because of that there is no music of Nickelback in the presentation, nor are there any exclusive interviews with the band themselves. The other problem with this DVD is that it is actually a video called “The Road To Success” that was released a few years back, just repackaged and put back out. That is not necessarily a terrible thing, but if you don’t know that, and already own the original version, this would be a rip off. All that said, they do a good job of presenting the story of this vital band. I just think that they should be more honest about what it is they are releasing. This one came pretty close to a non-review. If the documentary itself had been just a little weaker I would not have been able to give it even a minor thumbs up. As it is, the thumb is further up than down, but it’s not fully vertical.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2006 Volume 5 at lulu.com/strangesound.
