The Great Kat

Beethoven’s Guitar Shred DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This DVD is not subtle – not at all. It’s a series of vignette featuring the Great Kat combining extreme metal with classical music. This woman seriously shreds! It’s all a bit over the top, though. Don’t get me wrong, she’s incredibly fast. It’s just that it seems at times like speed and technicality for the sake of speed and technicality. By the same token the video is very much sex and gratuitous violence for the sake of those things. This thing is extreme – and a bit cheesy in terms of the video cliches and low budget effects. Here’s the long and short of it – the good and the bad. The musical talent is never in dispute here. This is sure to amaze fans of technical shredding. There is just a bit of an overkill to it all and much of it seems a little silly. Still, I suppose there is always a certain “over the top silliness” to a lot of extreme metal.
