Jethro Tull

Living With the Past CD and DVD Collector’s Edition

Review by Gary Hill

Let’s make things clear here – this is the same DVD Greg Olma reviewed before. The difference is, this set has a bonus CD added to the mix. I’ve always thought giving people an audio disc of the music on a DVD is a great way to include a little extra bang for the buck. I’m not sure about the logic in waiting several years to re-issue the disc to add it, though.

I’d have to say that I’m perhaps a bit more forgiving of the lack of true “concert” experience given by the DVD than was Olma. Part of that is, I’m not the diehard fan that he is. I really enjoy the DVD quite a bit. Sure, the little interspersing of interview clips can be a bit annoying, but it seems to be a really common approach these days – don’t ask me why.

So, I guess you’d like a “sum it all up” kind of judgment. This is a strong set. It was a strong set when originally issued. The addition of the audio CD is just sort of icing on the cake. If you already own that original, though, I don’t know if I’d rush out and get this one. Of course, Tull completists will have to have both. If you’ve held off on purchasing this thing, then it’s your lucky day. Now you can have the best of both worlds.
