Lee Konitz

Solos, The Jazz Sessions DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is an intriguing series. Essentially, they take a jazz musician and let them perform full on improvisations. In addition, the musician plays completely unaccompanied. In this case it’s Lee Konitz and his instrument is saxophone. The result is a video that will definitely appeal to fans of saxophone music. I’d say that it comes highly recommended for others in the way that it opens your mind to certain types of music. For one thing, the improvisational nature of the music opens a new dimension in the way you think about music. Additionally, by having just a single instrument in play you can focus more on the various intonations and variations of that sound. That brings a new depth to your understanding and appreciation of the instrument. Of course, the fact that the performance is incredible might have something to do with the enjoyment level of this DVD, too. Consider it just plain recommended.
