Electric Light Orchestra
Live: The Early Years DVD
Review by Gary Hill
Not everything ELO ever did was progressive rock. I’d have to say that this DVD of early performances qualifies, though. This DVD is incredibly cool. The video and audio are all quite good, although a little variable, with a caveat. These are old films (yes, all shot on film) and you can tell. Don’t expect modern quality. That said, for the time period this stuff is exceptional and you’ll never find yourself thinking it’s bad. It’s just not the same level as video produced today. Don’t expect the monster stage shows that ELO would be known for later. Just expect some incredible performances of the type of music that really set the band apart. All fans of early ELO "must" own this. If you've wanted to get an idea of what these guys were like in the early days, this would be a great introduction, too.
