Dream Theater

Santiago, Chile 12/6/05 DVD

Review by Greg Olma

I have said it many times, Dream Theater are a band of the fans for the fans.  They manage to not only release a lot of product through the normal channels but they also put out a whole host of stuff through their own Ytsejam Records label.  It is kind of beating the bootleggers at their own game by putting out better releases than any bootlegger could.

This is the latest release from the Ytsejam Records label and it is a live show from Santiago, Chile (hence the title).  What you get is the full show and nothing more, which is fine by me.  They performed two sets on this stop of the Octavarium tour and while the video quality is lacking a little, the sound is great.  As always, the band performs different songs on almost all of their shows (Mike Portnoy made it a point to not play the same set in the same city ever) but since the show was promoting Octavarium, they played the title track along with “The Root Of All Evil,” “I Walk Beside You” and “Sacrificed Sons.”

I like these DVDs from their bootleg label but I would only recommend it to folks who have all their normal releases.  Some people might be disappointed with the video quality and the lack of bonus material.  If you are an uber-fan like me, then this is something that you don’t even have to think about getting.  Get these while they are still available because now that Mike Portnoy has left Dream Theater, I don’t know if he will be as willing to put product out by his former band.
