Hawklords

The Barney Bubbles Memorial Concert DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is probably the best Hawkwind DVD that Hawkwind never released. The set captures Hawklords (a band composed of some stellar Hawkwind alums) live in November of 2009. The music, light show and stage show (complete with dancers and all the things you normally associate with Hawkwind) all work together to create an experience that might be working under the name “Hawklords,” but truly is Hawkwind.  Of course, when you’ve got Harvey Bainbridge, Alan Davey, Jerry Richards, Adrian Shaw, Steve Swindells, Dan Thompson, Ron Tree  and Nik Turner, what else can you expect?

The musical selection here is full of Hawkwind classics from the opening one-two of “Earth Calling” and Born to Go” to “You Shouldn’t Do That” and the band’s “hit” “Silver Machine.” They touch on the weirder side of the group with “Ten Seconds of Forever.” Really, this is a classic Hawkwind performance by Hawklords.

The video and audio are both excellent. It is a PAL format disc, but is region free, so it should work in virtually any machine. The whole set is classy from the DVD itself to the tri-fold album style packaging and twelve page booklet. This comes highly recommended to any and all Hawkwind fans.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2011  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
