Marillion

Live From Cadogan Hall DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Marillion’s Less Is More album featured acoustic renditions of many of their songs. For the tour to promote that disc, the band performed in just such a fashion. This is the document of one of the concerts on that tour. I’ll be reviewing the CD version of this in the next issue of Music Street Journal, so the real deep information about the music will be included there. Suffice it to say that this is more than just a bunch of guys sitting around playing acoustic guitars and singing. The instrumentation often leans towards much more exotic instruments. Yet, none of it used for some kind of gimmick or sensationalism. All the instrumentation truly adds to the arrangement. This might be non-electrified music, but it’s neither stripped down nor simple. This is really an intriguing DVD at least in part because of this unique instrumentation. It’s a safe bet that you’ve seldom witnessed a band performing like this. It really makes for a unique experience. And, since it’s Marillion, you also know that it’s a class act. The sound and video are both high quality, just like the performance. If there’s one complaint to be made, it’s that there aren’t any bonus features. Still, the concert is strong enough to stand on its own.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2011  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
