Frank Zappa

Apostrophe / Over-Nite Sensation DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is an amazing documentary. It’s basically a retrospective looking back at the creation of two classic Zappa albums that were recorded at the same time. Of course, it’s more than that. There’s a real exploration of who Zappa was. There are detailed glimpses inside the music and what makes it so magic. There are interviews with many people who worked with Zappa. Dweezil Zappa sits at the mixing board and shows different parts of songs to help convey what was going on inside them. In addition, there’s lots of rare archival footage. All in all this is highly recommended to all Zappa fans – and that means casual and hardcore. It will really confirm the faith that the committed fans have always had in Zappa. It will go a long way to convince the more casual fans that Zappa was truly a musical genius.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2011  Volume 4 at lulu.com/strangesound.
