Strange Fruit: The Beatles' Apple Records DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This documentary is quite similar to the From Straight to Bizarre documentary I reviewed last time. This time, though, the focus is on Apple Records, the boutique label formed by the Beatles. On the surface, it would seem that a label founded by the most successful band at the time (arguably ever) would have been a huge success. Oddly enough, the label had few successes in the form of albums, but did a little better when it came to singles. Learn all about the history of Apple Records from the formation all the way through to the dissolution by watching this DVD. It uses archival footage, interviews and more to look at the circumstances surrounding each step, many of the releases on the label and much more. It’s recommended to Beatles fans, but really would be interesting to anyone interested in the music of that period.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
