Live At Rockpalast DVD

Review by Gary Hill

Public Image Ltd is not the Sex Pistols. Of course, it could be argued that the Pistols, and pure punk in general, had a limited shelf life from the start. Many old school punk musicians have said as much, that punk as an art form is limited and eventually artists run of out stuff to do within and be creative. Well, perhaps that’s why Public Image Ltd isn’t punk, per se. They are, however, pretty darned cool.

This DVD is live performance from 1983 that used to be available on VHS. It was, as you might guess from the title, filmed for and aired on German television. The concert is great and the audio and visual is quite solid, too. The band make their way through many of their songs and “Anarchy in the UK.”  There are also some great bonuses in the way of rehearsal footage and interviews. This is highly recommended for fans of John Lydon, PIL and music in general. It would certainly be a great way to get familiarized with these guys.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 2 at lulu.com/strangesound.
