Pelican

After The Ceiling Cracked DVD

Review by Larry Toering

For me, this is Pelican's finest hour, and the DVD version  captured it best. The amount of sheer energy displayed will leave anybody breathless just watching. It comes packed with a full seven tracks and the same amount of bonus footage and interview stuff, as well. There is always something you get from a video that you don't with audio and vice versa, but the DVD makes the release if you don't want to both see and hear it without changing three discs in the process. Otherwise the whole set is recommended. Prog city with that strong metal vibe is what Pelican are all about, and this set from Scala, Kings Cross, London in 2005, released in 2008, is the best they have offered up since 2001 to my liking.  The bonus features have some interviews and footage from Seattle but surprisingly Portland, too. Also footage from L.A. And Youngstown, Ohio are included as well, which all date from 2003 to 2006. Along with the City Of Echoes release, this is as good as they get in the studio and live.

This review is available in book format (hardcover and paperback) in Music Street Journal: 2012  Volume 3 at lulu.com/strangesound.
