Welcome to Rockwell DVD

Review by G. W. Hill

This DVD showcases some performances from a 2009 charity concert. Personally, not all of them were particularly noteworthy – mainly the opening group Razorlight. They were OK, but really didn’t do a lot for me. There are three songs from Robert Plant, basically in the same vein as his new Band of Joy performances. They are quite cool. Joss Stone comes out after Plant and purely owns the stage doing two killer soulful tunes. Then Tom Jones (yes, that Tom Jones) comes out for a couple tunes. Stone comes back out and they do a great duet together. David Gray was the next performer, and I’m really not familiar with him. He was OK, but for me that was another weak point in the set. Finally the majority of the people mentioned before (without Gray and Plant, though) along with a host of other people hit the stage for a stirring performance of The Beatles’ “Let it Be.” All in all, it’s quite a cool set. Since it was apparently filmed for television, the sound and video are both quite good.
