Ike and Tina Turner

Ike & Tina: On The Road: 1971-72 DVD

Review by Gary Hill

This is a real film made around the tour that Ike and Tina Turner undertook during the years mentioned in the title. It’s an intimate look in terms of behind the scenes stuff. Don’t expect the kind of tabloid story that later emerged about this couple. Instead, it’s a couple that’s also a band on tour. The footage (interviews, behind the scenes and onstage) are all well worth owning. It’s just kind of odd that this wasn’t filmed and preserved better. Yes, it was the early 1970s, but most of this is in black and white and the stuff that’s in color is washed out. There are a lot of film glitches, like the film had been stored poorly and got damaged over time. This was a big music act, not some small time band. I can’t believe that they didn’t film this better and keep better track of the film over the years. I mean, I’ve seen other concert films from the same time that are much better. Just look at Yessongs, for instance – and I’d guess that Ike and Tina were bigger than Yes at that time. Still, as archival product, this is good. It’s just far from great.
