Flying Colors

The Making of Flying Colors DVD

Review by Larry Toering

When this band broke on the scene in mid 2012, the fans were expecting a lot, and a lot is what they got and then some. They produced an album of total perfection to back the great ensemble of players in the band. And they did it in just nine days together, so it did not come without some speculation as to how the whole project would unfold. Well, I’m glad to say it all went fantastic and this is a well enough put together souvenir of the proceedings at they happened in those great sessions. It covers a lot without spoiling anything to come, which will be another DVD, due out in April 2013. It will be a full live set though, so this is perfect to warm up for the experience which is expected to be nothing short of brilliant. On this documentary of sorts, most of the songs see a bit of light in early formation, and some running through of others in different ways, as well. It has the feeling of five virtuosos getting together, some for the first time ever, and hashing out a monster session, along with some close knit friends and crew. It’s great to see how some of the songs unfolded as they were working on them, and it features stuff like drum cams, and other bells and whistles to make it a fine product to go with the album, the next DVD and whatever this band has in store for the future. Flying Colors are one of the best ensembles to be assembled in the last two decades at least, in this reviewer’s opinion. But it’s definitely the kind of thing you have to prepare yourself for, as it is musical, but also features much more.
